Peru: Land of the Ancient Inca - A Family Trip
July 2 – 9
Five hundred years ago, Peru lay at the heart of a vast empire that stretched over 400,000 square miles from northwest Argentina to southern Columbia.
A legendary kingdom, this Land of the Inca came to an end with the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. In 1911, Hiram Bingham stumbled onto the astonishing ruins of a city perched on a rocky ridge and hidden in the mist: Machu Picchu.
Our adventure starts in the Sacred Valley, and includes a stop at the village of Accha Alta, where you can learn the age-old craft of backstrap weaving, which has been passed down through generations.
Enjoy the scenery as you raft down the Rio Vilcanota. This whitewater rafting trip is both exciting and suitable for first timers. You will raft through the heart of the Sacred Valley, while taking in the hand-crafted stone retaining walls, pastoral scenes of eucalyptus, and snow-covered 20,000-foot peaks of the
Andes, and keeping a look out for the Giant Andean hummingbird. Visits to lesser known Inca ruins such as Pisaq prepare us to be awed by the highlight of our trip: Machu Picchu. A train ride to these mysterious ruins, known as the Lost City of the Incas, is sure to stun. And you have the option to hike along the Inca Trail through spectacular scenery and arrive in Machu Picchu by the Gate of the Sun.
After a thorough exploration of the ruins, you will continue on to colonial Cuzco, where you have the chance to take in the major sites before returning to Lima.
Price: $3,890 adults & $3,790 children, double occupancy
