Guatemala: A Volunteer Trip
October 31 – November 14
As a volunteer in bustling Guatemala City, you will experience first-hand one of the world’s most diverse and historically rich nations.
The population includes Ladinos, or people of Spanish heritage, Mayans, and Mestizos, people who are a mix of both Ladino and Mayan. Guatemala City is the economic, governmental and cultural capital of Guatemala.
As a volunteer you will experience a safe and structured program designed to help you immerse yourself in the local culture. You will work side by side with local people and share in the goals of a community. The volunteer work is with carefully selected Partner Programs, all of which are dynamic and inspiring community-led initiatives. These include orphanages and childcare centers, schools, health clinics and hospitals, homes for the elderly, and centers for people with disabilities. Volunteers complete a skills and interest survey, which helps the in-country staff to match you with a local Partner Program.
The group stays together in a comfortable house in a local, middle class neighborhood. Clean, modest accommodations with shared occupancy rooms (two to six volunteers per room) are standard. Local cooks prepare and serve daily meals. Cultural and learning activities include bi-weekly language lessons, insightful discussions with guest speakers on topics such as local politics and Guatemalan art, and city excursions to areas of historical interest. There will also be ample free time to travel and explore the community on your own. You will gain an understanding of the complex challenges that the community faces, and join them in effecting positive changes.
