Bangladesh and India: Beyond Caste and Poverty
January 10 – 25

Join alumnae from Vassar, Bryn Mawr, Smith, and Wellesley colleges as we connect with women in Bangladesh and India and explore women's issues that affect us all. Combine sightseeing with in-depth discussions and meetings with women in leadership positions in government, education, business, media, and the arts. Bangladesh and India are countries where women have played and continue to play powerful roles. Each day will include a preparatory briefing from our faculty leader Wellesley alumna, Professor of Religious Studies Dr. Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh at Colby College.
Your sightseeing will take you through the kaleidoscope of river life in Dhaka to the colonial streets of Calcutta. Nestled against the Arabian Sea is Bombay, or as it is now known, Mumbai. Mumbai is India's most important financial and industrial city. The group will fly to Delhi and discover the city's historic core. Finally, in Agra, you will uncover the vast architectural legacy of the Mughal Empire, including Emperor Shah Jahan's glorious monument to eternal love: the Taj Mahal.
Wind your way through the lush wildlife preserves of Thekkady to the famed Kerala backwaters, where you will float past villages and observe the tempo of daily life from the deck of a private boat. Continue on to the western coast of India to Kochi, observe a performance of the traditional dance art form of Kathakali, and receive a hands-on lesson in Keralan cooking from a noted chef.
