The Volunteer Leadership Conference (VLC) was a success, despite the storm of the century that descended upon the Hudson Valley. The spirit was high! Volunteers left re-energized and committed to Vassar College. The club volunteers in attendance were encouraged to share the information that they had learned at VLC with fellow club volunteers. Also, the Club Officers Handbook will be distributed soon to all volunteers unable to make it to VLC. This year AAVC honored Virginia Cretella Mars ’51 with the Outstanding Service to Vassar Award at VLC. I am delighted to include the text from Ginnie’s poem, which she dedicated to her class, in this month’s Club Brewer. AAVC truly appreciates all that you do for the association and for the college; thank you! |

Club Spotlight: Philadelphia Vassar Club |
|
| |
On a warm fall afternoon in Philadelphia, nearly two dozen area alumnae/i gathered at Bryn Mawr College’s Wyndham House to hear Elizabeth Daniels ’41, professor emerita of English and Vassar historian, Share some of the history of Vassar. She captivated her audience with many stories about the early, formative years and the challenges of entrance requirements for women. She spoke about the profile of women who were first accepted (at their fathers’ urging), Matthew Vassar, and early administrative politics. Daniels also shattered many of the myths about the college that we all held near and dear over the years. No, Jane Fonda did not ride through the halls of Main on her motorcycle only wearing a string of pearls and white gloves, and women did not bring their personal maids to live with them in Strong. Two students, Jennifer Dawson ’06 and Sebastian Langdell ’06, accompanied Daniels and gave a Power Point presentation about the current Vassar Encyclopedia project, which is slated to be available online in Spring 2006. Also on the program was Ellen Freedman–Schultz ’81, newly elected president of the Philadelphia Vassar Club and author of The Vassar Club of Philadelphia Turns 100: A History 1904-2004. Dale Mezzacappa ’72, award–winning journalist and senior education writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer, facilitated the discussion. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. To the Class of 1951
To Vassar we came, so young and naïve
To study, have fun and to learn.
But after four years in this rarified place,
For the challenge of life did we yearn.
So off did we go, all eager and bright,
Knowing all that we needed to know.
For of course, we were ‘Vassar,’ what more could one say?
And we had places to go!
And places we went be it family or job,
To reach fame, though many did not.
But wherever we went, we excelled with our minds
Vassar’s hallmark we never forgot.
Now over the years, the fates played their part;
Some flourished, some faltered, grew old.
In spite of the outcome, we stayed with our course
To be feisty and funny and bold.
And here as we enter our golden years,
What you gave us we can never repay:
Our spirit, our pride in a college superb,
So to Vassar, a ‘thank you,’ we say.
Salve.

Speakers Network Program in Seattle
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the Pacific Northwest, over 20 alumnae/i gathered at the home of Laura Cooley ’83 to listen to David Nova ’83 speak of his monumental 2,650–mile hike of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. Less than twelve hours after completing the hike he was welcomed by enthusiastic alumnae/i who were in awe of the wonderfully picturesque images he shared from his journey. |
