Affiliate Groups

In 1990, an ad hoc committee of the AAVC Board of Directors concluded that it was in the best interest of the alumnae/i association to support affiliate groups within its overall structure as a way to reach alumnae/i whose ties to the college are not always sustained through affiliation with their graduating class or regional club.

African American Alumnae/i of Vassar College (AAAVC) gathered on campus in April 2005 to celebrate their Eighth Triennial and the organization's 20th anniversary.

The first affiliate group (African American Alumnae/i of Vassar College, AAAVC) was formed as a committee of the AAVC board in 1984. In 1990, lesbian and gay alumnae/i petitioned the board for affiliate status, which resulted in the creation of the AAVC board's Guidelines for Affiliated Status, and was followed by the formation of Lesbian and Gay Alumnae/i of Vassar College (LAGAVC, 1990), Asian Pacific Alumnae/i of Vassar College (APAVC, 1993), Latina/o Alumnae/i of Vassar College (LAVC, 1994), Jewish Alumnae/i of Vassar College (JAVC, 1996) and Athletic and Fitness Alumnae/i of Vassar College (AFAVC, 2000).

Like classes and clubs, all affiliate group activities are self-supporting.

Affinity Group Networks

With the expansion of AAVC’s Online Community, we are now beginning to develop and launch other alumnae/i affinity group networks in collaboration with other Vassar departments. These affinity group networks are informal gathering places for alumnae/i with common educational or career backgrounds and are yet another way to reach those alumnae/i outside of the formal class, regional club, or affiliate group models.

We are proud to announce the launch of our first such affinity group network: Vassar College Education Alumnae/i. Intended to foster communications between and among Vassar alumnae/i who have studied and/or work in the field of education, as well as connect them with Vassar’s education department, the network includes its very own website as a central location for all information relevant to education alumnae/i. Visit the Vassar College Education Alumnae/i website now and join the discussion group to keep in touch with other Vassar alumnae/i in the educational field.
